Health & Function
While your teeth are the stars of the show, their success is entirely reliant on a supporting cast of gums. Since three out of four teeth are lost through gum disease and recent studies show a strong relationship between gum disease and medical conditions such as strokes, heart disease and halitosis, it’s clear why we put such emphasis on the early identification and cure of any gum disorder.
You really do have quite a bit to lose if you don’t look after your teeth and that’s why we passionately advocate a preventive approach through our Dental Health Review and periotherapy sessions.
Dental Health Review
The Dental Health Review is an annual, comprehensive appraisal of your dental health. With mouth cancer killing around 5000 people each year in the UK, and early detection and treatment considerably increasing survival chances, regular dental visits are highly recommended.
The 45-minute consultation includes a review of your medical history, a discussion of your dental health and any concerns regarding your teeth and smile, before the dentist commences his systematic ‘Mouth Map’ appraisal. An assessment of the health of your gums, cheeks, tongue, lips and teeth is followed by an evaluation of any previous dental work to ensure it continues to fulfil its purpose.
On completion of the review we score your overall dental health and propose a treatment programme that ensures problems are corrected and dental health is maintained.
Periotherapy
When it comes to oral health forget how your teeth look for a minute: a fabulous-looking smile can exist without healthy gums – temporarily! The long term survival of your natural smile is dependant on the support of healthy gums and their upkeep is the remit of our periotherapists.
During a periotherapy consultation bacterial plaque that builds up between visits – contributing to decay, gum disease and bad breath – is removed leaving your mouth healthy and smelling fresh. In addition to advice for improving your oral hygiene routine between visits, you will be recommended and shown how to use the right interdental products and given samples to get you started.
If gum disease is present, depending on its severity, we will undertake or recommend an appropriate course of action: immediate treatment, the use of antibiotics and good oral hygiene, and in more severe cases, gum surgery or referral to a hospital specialist.
Once your supporting cast of gums is ready, the spotlight can be focused on the stars of the show – your teeth and smile. More on periotherapy with Hazel Cameron at www.borderperio.co.uk
